Chad-Russia: Idriss Deby visits Vladimir Putin, with a view to strengthening bilateral relations

Chadian Transitional President Idriss Deby is on a 48-hour official visit to Moscow, arriving on the night of Tuesday, January 23. During his reception at the Kremlin on Wednesday, the Chadian Head of State stated that he is visiting «a brotherly country» with the intention of «strengthening bilateral relations».

Vladimir Putin, the initiator of this visit, congratulated his Chadian counterpart for successfully «stabilizing the situation» in his country.

Relations between Chad and Russia «have particularly developed in recent years», noted Putin, expressing Russia’s commitment to continuing this trajectory with the Sahelian state to contribute «in every possible way» to its security.

«Dear Mr. President, we closely follow the situation developing in your country. You know that we have followed with great concern what was happening in terms of the fight against terrorist attacks and what happened to your father», stated Putin, expressing satisfaction with Chad’s organization of a constitutional referendum. We are pleased that it was possible to organize a referendum on the constitution. I am confident that the elections will take place at a high level in the near future. We are happy that you have managed to stabilize the situation in the country», he added.

During the meeting, Idriss Deby offered his condolences to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who was mourning the crash of a Russian military plane in the Belgorod region.

On January 24, a Russian military transport plane, Il-76, crashed in Russia in a border region near Ukraine.

The aircraft was carrying 74 people, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war intended for exchange.

All individuals on board perished in the accident, according to Russian authorities.

«I learned about the plane crash, and I would like, on my behalf and on behalf of the people, to express my sincere condolences for the death of the soldiers», declared Mahamat Idriss Deby, the Chadian transitional president.
