17th edition of the Film Festival in Burkina Faso: Exploring Corruption and Terrorism Nexus

The 17th edition of the Film Festival on Rights and Freedoms of Expression is set to captivate Ouagadougou from December 9 to 16, 2023. Themed “Corruption, the New Terrorism?” the organizing committee of the Ciné Droit Libre Festival made this announcement on December 2, 2023.

This cinematic celebration aims to unravel the intricate connections between corruption and terrorism.

Festival coordinator Abdoulaye Diallo highlighted that beyond corruption, the event will delve into pressing issues like gender-based violence, children’s rights, migrants’ rights, democracy, and freedom of expression.

«It positions itself as a committed player in the fight against corruption while exploring other critical topics», he emphasized.

According to Diallo, the festival serves as a platform for sharing experiences, fostering dialogue, and finding solutions to contemporary challenges.

Musician Smockey, one of the moderators for the festival’s screenings and debates, sees the event as a unique opportunity to strengthen connections within the world of cinema and engage with audiences.

Smockey expressed, «This type of festival is often lacking because most festivals primarily focus on entertainment issues. This is the first festival where we’ve connected with great individuals across various categories. It’s a festival for exchanging experiences and reaching the farthest corners of the earth».

The agenda of the 17th edition of the Film Festival on Rights and Freedoms of Expression includes the celebration of International Human Rights Day, a round table, a forum discussing terrorism and corruption, a democratic dialogue on pan-Africanism, and reflections on the legacy of former President Thomas Sankara.

The festival is poised to be a thought-provoking and engaging exploration of pressing global issues through the lens of cinema.
