Algeria: Strong Algerian delegation participates in the 47th Conference of the European Coordination for support and solidarity with the Sahrawi People

The proceedings of the 47th Conference of the European Coordination for Support and Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (Eucoco) commenced on Friday evening at the Toledo Congress Palace in Spain, with the participation of several delegations from around the world.

In his opening address at this event, the President of Eucoco, Pierre Galand, condemned the policy of double standards adopted by European countries in dealing with conflicts worldwide.

He mentioned that conference participants had come to Toledo to «express their disagreement with this policy and meet the challenge of solidarity with all peoples fighting for their dignity, fundamental rights, and freedom».

In this regard, participants emphasized the need for international support for the oppressed Sahrawi and Palestinian peoples.

The Algerian delegation, led by the President of the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS), Said Ayachi, stated that «The Algerian delegation is very strong with 24 parliamentarians in addition to CNASPS delegation members. This significant Algerian presence provides assurance to the Sahrawis, reinforcing the idea that Algeria remains alongside the Sahrawi people in their just struggle for freedom and independence».

Apart from the Sahrawis, Mr. Ayachi conveyed that the Algerian delegation also aims to convey a message to conference participants, asserting that despite misleading speeches from the Moroccan occupying regime, Algeria maintains a consistent stance in support of the Sahrawi people.

«Algeria’s position is not based on a subjective assessment of the problem but on a fundamental consideration of respect for international law, which unquestionably recognizes the Sahrawis’ right to choose their destiny freely through a self-determination referendum», he added.

It is noteworthy that conference participants also discussed the programs and working strategies of solidarity movements with the Sahrawi people, along with legal battles in European courts.

An important verdict concerning the EU/Morocco fishing agreements, illegally extended to Western Sahara, is expected in 2024.
