Sport/Rugby: Melvyn Jaminet’s transfer creates controversy

The transfer of Melvyn Jaminet from Toulouse to Toulon is a practice that Clément Poitrenaud would prefer not to see become widespread. He was a player for Stade Toulousain during the World Cup, and now he’s a player for Rugby Club Toulonnais.

Similar to Cheslin Kolbe a few years ago, Melvyn Jaminet has had his contract bought out by another club, exchanging a red and black jersey for another one with the same colors.

The RCT (Rugby Club Toulonnais) is expected to spend around 550.000 euros to acquire the services of the French international player, who was under contract with Toulouse until 2025. This kind of transfer, in a way, remains a rarity in rugby.

It’s not something that is well-received by stakeholders in the Top 14, as exemplified by Clément Poitrenaud.

«This is part of the new norms, even if it’s not as developed as in football»,noted the coach of the Stade Toulousain backs, when interviewed by La Dépêche. «These are things that are increasingly seen, which we have to deal with, even though it’s always delicate to see a player leave the team during the season. These things happen today just as coaches do.

Last year, some coaches were dismissed and ended up finishing the season in rival clubs. It’s not something we want to see become common, but it happens, as it does now with Melvyn»

Remaining loyal to Stade Toulousain throughout his career, Poitrenaud doesn’t hold a grudge against Jaminet. It’s not a personal matter for him, as the former France international’s perspective is probably more global.

«Honestly, it’s handled quite well by the group and also on our side. The relationship with Melvyn is good, so there’s no issue in that regard», emphasized Poitrenaud.
