Liberia: George Weah on course for a second term

On Thursday, Liberian President George Weah announced his candidacy for the presidential election on 10 October, which will be combined with parliamentary elections.

Running for re-election, President George Weah faces 19 opponents.  The campaign officially opened on 05 August and will close at midnight on 08 October.

«During our first term in office, we laid the foundations for peace, freedom of expression, macro-economic stability and the restoration of confidence in the national education system. I can guarantee that the years 2024 and beyond will be better for all Liberians» George Weah declared in front of his thousands of supporters.

The supporters wore red caps, the colour of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), the party of the former international football star turned politician.

Weah was elected president in 2017 and took office in 2018 for a six-year term. He is a role model for many young Liberians. He grew up in a slum in Monrovia. After becoming one of the world’s greatest football stars, he returned to university to complete his studies before being elected senator and then head of state.

During his presidential term, George Weah undertook a number of major projects to promote the development of Liberia. These included the construction of modern schools, a health programme for all and infrastructure development.
