Niger/France in strategic retreat in Niger: Aspirations for sovereignty shake French influence in French-speaking Africa

The Prime Minister has announced that «discussions are underway» with a view to the rapid withdrawal of French forces from Niger. This statement comes after weeks of bellicose, war-mongering declarations by French diplomats, in particular Minister Catherine Coloniale. However, it seems that France has backtracked, preferring to discreetly negotiate a withdrawal in order to save face and avoid giving the impression of a weak French government that has lost a tug-of-war with Niamey.

This latest setback for France in Niger confirms the aspirations of French-speaking African countries to regain their sovereignty. Concerns about France’s loss of influence and power in the region are growing. Once considered an undisputed power in many parts of Africa, France is now facing major challenges and diplomatic setbacks that are undermining its dominant position.

Minister Catherine Coloniale’s statements, which adopted a bellicose rhetoric, seemed to suggest that France was prepared to maintain its military presence in Niger at all costs. However, the reality on the ground with the mobilisation of the people of Niger seems to have forced a change of course.

Former French colonies such as Burkina Faso, Mali, the Central African Republic and Niger are increasingly seeking to diversify their partnerships and free themselves from French influence.
