Togo: President Faure Gnassingbé revamps Kamina Historic Site and establishes a History Museum

One of the major visions of President Faure Gnassingbé of Togo is to revolutionize tourist sites to promote the country’s economy. In line with this vision, the Minister of Culture, Mr. Kossi Lamadokou, has announced that the Kamina historic site (located 20 km from Atakpamé) will soon host a history museum.

Recently, a call for tenders was launched to recruit a company that will be responsible for the construction of the new history museum on the grand historic site of Togo, as part of the redevelopment project led by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism under the direction of President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé. According to the ministry, the construction is expected to last seven months.

As a vestige of Togo’s colonial history and a national tourist heritage, the Kamina historic site is not the only tourist site to be rehabilitated according to President Faure Gnassingbé’s vision. Among them is the Batammariba site in Koutammakou, which is estimated to cost 3 billion CFA francs, aligning with Togo’s tourism development plans.

It should be noted that all these construction projects will be financed by the Togolese government, in accordance with the budget projections for the year 2023 under President Faure Gnassingbé’s leadership.

Kamina, a former German military base, housed a powerful transcontinental radio station and a wireless telegraphy transmitting center directly linked to Berlin, the Namibian colony, and the German fleet in the Atlantic.

The site was dynamited by the army before its surrender in August 1914. Since then, the site has periodically hosted an art exhibition that has attracted visitors and tourists in recent years.
