2026 World Cup/ Kane’s record brace powers England past Croatia in World Cup thriller

Harry Kane equalled Gary Lineker’s England record of 10 World Cup goals as the Three Lions overcame Croatia 4-2 in a pulsating Group F opener.

England surged ahead through the twice-taken penalty of Kane after Noni Madueke drew a foul from Luka Modric. Croatia hit back through Martin Baturina’s curling effort, but Kane restored the lead with a header from Declan Rice’s corner.

Petar Musa volleyed a brilliant equaliser on the stroke of half-time, but England dominated the second period. Jude Bellingham, starting in the No.10 role, drove in from the right to make it 3-2 before substitute Marcus Rashford calmly finished Bukayo Saka’s excellent work.

It marks the first time England have won their opening World Cup fixture in three tournaments, avenging their 2018 semi-final defeat to the same opponents.

The side of the Coach Thomas Tuchel showed the intensity he demanded, forcing Dominik Livakovic into several second-half saves. Croatia, semi-finalists in 2018 and 2022, now face an uphill battle to progress.

England’s blend of youth and experience looks formidable as they chase a first World Cup since 1966.
