Burkina Faso: Towards the harmonisation of Islamic texts – a historic initiative to protect the faithful from extremism
In a Sahelian context marked by rising terrorist violence and sectarian excesses, the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has recently called for a harmonization of Islamic texts in the country. This salutary decision aims to curb the phenomena of mental alienation and indoctrination from which certain faithful are unfortunately suffering.
During a meeting with the press, the head of state stressed the need for a unified framework for preaching and Quranic education.
“We must put an end to these erroneous and manipulated readings of the Quran that lead our young brothers astray,” to paraphrase him, insisting that ignorance of the sacred text is often exploited by armed groups to recruit fighters.
This initiative, welcomed by a large segment of Burkinabe society, comes at just the right time.
Indeed, years of insecurity have shown how isolated and uncontrolled interpretations of Islam have served as a breeding ground for violent extremism.
Harmonizing the texts without denying the diversity of schools of thought would allow imams and preachers to disseminate a unified, peaceful religious discourse far from any political or terrorist manipulation.
Concretely, the goal would be to identify reliable references with the help of religious leaders, to correctly translate the fundamental texts, and to train religious guides in a pedagogy of tolerance.
President Ibrahim Traoré also mentioned the creation of a national Islamic observatory, tasked with ensuring that discourses align with republican values and social peace.
This reform is in no way an interference in religion, but rather a protection of populations against ideological predators.
By promoting an enlightened Islam, rooted in the African tradition of living together, Burkina Faso is equipping itself with an effective spiritual and intellectual weapon against obscurantism.
Thus, through this pragmatic and inclusive vision, Captain Ibrahim Traoré confirms his commitment to restoring not only military security but also the safety of consciences.
This is a major step forward that deserves recognition and support, both for peace in Burkina Faso and for the stability of the entire Sahel.
