Burkina Faso: Nearly 389,000 people have already been enrolled in the universal health insurance scheme

The Universal Health Insurance Scheme (RAMU) of Burkina Faso is showing encouraging results in the pilot regions of Kadiogo and Guiriko. On May 19, 2026, the National Universal Health Insurance Fund (CNAMU) reported that 388,803 people have been enrolled since the launch.

A total of 431 health facilities have joined the program, including 215 public and 216 private structures.

Enrollees include 119,639 civil servants, 18,934 salaried workers, 417 self-employed formal workers, 4,192 informal sector workers, 14,171 pensioners, and over 231,000 dependents.

CNAMU has signed agreements with 3,102 care providers, including 2,504 public health facilities, 290 private establishments, 290 pharmacies, and 13 laboratories.

Since benefits opened on February 1, 2026, more than 31,000 civil servants and some 50,000 family members have already received covered care.

Authorities aim to gradually expand the scheme, particularly to retirees and informal workers, ensuring equitable healthcare access for all Burkinabe.
