Burkina Faso/Farewell to the transition, hello to the revolution: Captain Ibrahim Traoré is eligible to stand in the presidential election

The Transitional Legislative Assembly has adopted a new charter. Gone are the provisional texts. In their place is the Charter of the Revolution. The shift is semantic, but it is more than that. It reflects a desire to embed the dynamic set in motion since 2022 over the long term. The change in name is no small matter.

The President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, may now run in the next elections. Presidential, legislative, municipal: he is eligible.

Until now, the question of his candidacy remained unresolved. The text lifts the veil. Those who were waiting for a withdrawal now know where they stand.

The Transitional Government becomes the “Government of the People.” The Transitional Legislative Assembly becomes the “Legislative Assembly of the People.” Words carry weight.

They signal that the era is no longer one of interim arrangements but of sustainable construction. The people are at the center. The vocabulary has changed, and so has the direction.

On April 1, 2025, Captain Ibrahim Traoré had warned: “We are not in a democracy.

We are indeed in a Popular Progressive Revolution.” One year later, the charter gives substance to that statement.

This adoption comes as security gains are beginning to show. Areas are being liberated, routes secured, and the army is regaining the upper hand.

In this context, the authorities believe that the people must be able to choose those who lead the fight. The Charter of the Revolution is the legal tool to see the process through to the end.
