Togo reaffirms support for Sahel States Alliance in fight against terrorism

Togo has officially reaffirmed its backing for the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in the fight against terrorist armed groups destabilizing the region. This position comes as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger; members of this confederation intensify efforts to secure their territories against the terrorist threat.

For Togolese authorities, this commitment follows a logic of prevention and regional solidarity.

Lomé considers the spread of insecurity toward border areas a direct risk that must be anticipated. Stabilizing the Sahel also means protecting Togo’s own borders and preserving its internal stability.

This political support could quickly translate into concrete actions on the ground. Intelligence sharing between security services, cooperation in preventing radicalization, securing sensitive areas, and coordinated efforts against cross-border criminal networks are among the potential areas of collaboration.

Togo, which maintains balanced diplomatic relations with all countries in the sub-region, positions itself as a useful actor in finding solutions to Sahelian crises.

This reaffirmation of support also comes as the AES seeks to diversify its international partnerships.
