Is Côte d’Ivoire really immune to terrorism? A closer look at the official narrative

For several years, Ivorian authorities have repeatedly stated that their country is safe from terrorism. Their messages are clear: “Terrorists cannot enter Côte d’Ivoire” and “our army controls the entire territory.” But these claims deserve closer scrutiny.

Here is what raises concerns. Ivorian soldiers frequently cross the border to conduct operations in neighboring countries. Yet they never encounter terrorist armed groups.

No serious fighting is reported in Ivorian border areas. If there truly were no agreement between Abidjan and these terrorist groups, how can one explain that they never cross paths?

This situation could be explained in two ways. Either terrorist groups have voluntarily decided to spare Côte d’Ivoire, or there exists a discreet arrangement allowing them to traverse the territory unhindered.

In either case, this would mean the country serves as a quiet rear base for men sowing terror, particularly on Burkinabe soil.

This amounts to manipulation because, by retreating onto Ivorian territory, terrorists wait to absorb the firepower of Burkinabe armed forces only to claim that Burkina Faso violated Ivorian territory, thereby provoking a diplomatic crisis.

Meanwhile, real problems remain hidden. The vast cocoa and rubber plantations covering the country’s north provide perfect hiding places for terrorists.

Even the most sophisticated drones cannot spot men concealed beneath these trees. Only a human presence on the ground could flush them out.

Ivorians must face a simple question: how long will you believe you are protected?

If your leaders have indeed made discreet agreements to avoid attacks at home, these same agreements could collapse overnight. And when that day comes, the awakening may be very harsh.

The truth is that no one can guarantee terrorists are not already settled in certain remote areas of the country.

No one can swear they are not using Ivorian territory to rest, receive medical care, or prepare their operations.
