Burkina Faso unveils new national security strategy for 2026-2030
Burkina Faso has adopted a new National Internal Security Strategy (SSI) for 2026-2030, supported by a rolling three-year action plan, to address the nation’s evolving security challenges. This roadmap marks a significant step in modernizing the country’s security framework and consolidating recent gains in the fight against crime and terrorism.
Security Minister Mahamoudou Sana stated the strategy fills a critical legal and operational void, replacing the previous 2003 framework. “Threats have evolved, as have the actors. It was imperative to adopt a more modern and integrated approach,” he explained.
The new strategy incorporates innovative elements, leveraging technology for threat prevention, detection, and response while emphasizing community collaboration. The clear objective is ensuring lasting security in both urban and rural areas amid ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
Minister Sana highlighted a positive trend, with the crime rate dropping from 0.31 in 2022 to 0.26 in 2024, crediting security forces and increased citizen involvement.
However, he stressed the need to consolidate these gains through resource pooling and enhanced inter-agency coordination.
Developed through broad consultation, the strategy provides a detailed risk assessment and tailored responses to contemporary threats.
It aims to position Burkina Faso as a space of peace, stability, and shared development where every citizen contributes to national security.
