Burkina Faso: On the 80th anniversary of the UN, the country calls for profound and equitable reforms of the multilateral system

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations (UN), the government of Burkina Faso seized the opportunity to call for a refoundation of the multilateral system. In a world marked by persistent imbalances and international governance deemed unequal, Burkina Faso is advocating for real, profound, and fair reforms centered on the needs of peoples, not on the interests of major powers.

While acknowledging the work of the UN System in Burkina Faso, particularly in the humanitarian, social, and development fields, national authorities expressed their desire for a more balanced, sincere, and respectful partnership.

The government reaffirmed the country’s full readiness to continue its cooperation with the UN, but within a framework where state sovereignty and mutual understanding are fully respected.

This stance comes in a global context where a growing number of voices, in Africa and beyond, are denouncing the bias and limitations of the UN system, often accused of reflecting the interests of major powers more than those of developing countries.

For Burkina Faso, after eight decades of existence, the UN must imperatively reinvent itself if it wishes to remain a credible framework for international dialogue and justice.

The Burkinabe authorities thus stressed the necessity for the institution to reform its decision-making mechanisms to make them more inclusive and representative.

They also recalled that the true legitimacy of the UN rests on its ability to treat all nations fairly, without discrimination or political interference.

Burkina Faso, engaged in a dynamic of sovereignty and national refoundation, now intends to make the voice of African peoples heard in major global forums. Through this call, the country is not rejecting international cooperation but is demanding a more just, more independent organization that is truly in the service of humanity.

This strong message reflects Burkina Faso’s will to participate in building a more balanced world order, where every nation, large or small, would be considered with the same respect and dignity.
