Burkina Faso: When the Ministry of Security focuses on modernization to address security challenges

The Ministry of Security, led by Senior Commissioner Mahamadou Sana, is now placing innovation at the heart of its strategy to address the multiple security challenges facing Burkina Faso. Confronted by the terrorist threat, urban crime, and the rapid evolution of the security environment, the department is committed to a profound modernization of the National Police.
This direction is being realized through several concrete initiatives. First, the establishment of mobile police stations, capable of rapid deployment in high-risk areas or those far from major urban centers.
These flexible units bring the police closer to the population and strengthen the security presence on the ground.
Second, the increased use of intervention motorcycles is effectively addressing urban delinquency by enabling security forces to operate with greater mobility and speed in hard-to-reach neighborhoods.
The Minister also emphasized the importance of integrating new technologies into operational systems: secure communication tools, modern surveillance systems, and interconnected databases to better anticipate and neutralize threats.
Alongside these innovations is a determination to strengthen cooperation between the Defense and Security Forces (FDS), the judiciary, local authorities, and communities, to ensure shared and sustainable security.
For Mahamadou Sana, the police of tomorrow must be “republican, close to the citizen, professional, and of integrity.” This is why particular attention is being paid to the continuous training of police officers and the improvement of their working conditions.
The government and the President of Faso are supporting this effort by investing in equipment and the modernization of security structures.
These reforms aim to build a more effective police force, better prepared to face threats.
The Minister has thus called on the security forces to embody a spirit of vigilance and patriotism. “Burkina Faso is counting on every one of you.
Be the guardians of our sovereignty and the sentinels of our national dignity,” he stated. Through these innovations, the Ministry intends to strengthen citizens’ trust and lay the foundation for a form of community security adapted to current realities.
