Africa: When Pan-Africanists denounce a smear campaign and raise ethical questions about the media

A controversy has erupted following a complaint filed by Pan-African activists against the European Union (EU), accusing it of defamation and the dissemination of false information. These activists, unfairly labeled as « pro-Russian » or accused of receiving Russian financial support, are challenging an EU report drafted in the context of the conflict in Ukraine. Originally intended to sanction Russian oligarchs, the document is alleged to have been misused by France to specifically target Pan-Africanists critical of its policies in Africa, without providing any concrete evidence.
Following the complaint filed with the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg, the EU has requested France to present solid evidence to substantiate these claims.
In the absence of convincing proof, certain French media outlets appear to be mobilizing to legitimize these accusations.
Some journalists, lacking sufficient factual basis, are reportedly seeking testimonies or information, sometimes by reaching out to African actors aligned with French interests, in an attempt to support a narrative that remains, for now, unsubstantiated.
Recently, from Cairo, Bekki Benameur, an Algerian pan-Africanist and president of the NGO ANA (Aimons Notre Afrique), condemned these maneuvers.
He promised to soon reveal the names of those involved in these questionable practices.
Benameur called for greater transparency and accountability, emphasizing that these accusations aim to discredit the Pan-African movement and divert attention from the real issues at stake.
This episode raises significant ethical questions for French journalists. Their mission is to seek the truth, not to propagate unverified accusations or participate in disinformation campaigns.
It is crucial that French media demonstrate rigor and independence, refusing to be instrumentalized by political agendas.
On their part, pan-Africanists are demanding justice and the right to defend themselves.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible journalism, which resists manipulation and works in the public interest rather than serving partisan motives.
