Nigeria’s senate president Akpabio faces calls for Investigation over harassment allegations

Allegations of sexual harassment against Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, have sparked national debate, with growing calls for an independent probe. The accusations were made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who claims Akpabio made inappropriate advances toward her during a December 2023 visit to his residence in Akwa Ibom state.

Akpoti-Uduaghan alleges that Akpabio took her by the hand, led her around his house, and made suggestive remarks while her husband was present. She also claims he later insinuated that she should « take care of him » if she wanted her motions to receive favorable consideration in the Senate.

Akpabio has strongly denied the accusations, stating he has always respected women and was once awarded Nigeria’s most gender-friendly governor.

The controversy has led to protests in Abuja, with demonstrators divided between supporting Akpabio and demanding his resignation.

Amid the growing pressure, Akpoti-Uduaghan formally petitioned the Senate for an inquiry, which Akpabio himself referred to the committee on ethics and public conduct.

As the nation watches closely, political observers argue that the case could test Nigeria’s commitment to accountability and gender justice in leadership.
