DRC/ Félix Tshisekedi appeals for genocide recognition at UN Human Rights Council
On the sidelines of the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, made a solemn appeal to the international community. This session was co-organized by the Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office and specialized agencies, in partnership with the Inter-institutional Commission for Victim Assistance and Reform Support (CIA-VAR) and the National Fund for Victim Reparations (FONAREV).
In his intervention, the Congolese Head of State urged the international community to officially recognize the genocides perpetrated on Congolese territory.
For him, this recognition is not only a duty of remembrance, but an essential condition for justice to be rendered to the victims and for lasting peace to be established in the region.
President Félix Tshisekedi also emphasized the need to assume collective responsibility in the face of the atrocities suffered by his country.
He denounced the infernal cycle summarized in three words: “denial, impunity, recurrence.”
According to him, breaking with this logic involves “telling the truth, judging the criminal, repairing the irreparable and guaranteeing non-repetition.”
Furthermore, he insisted that transitional justice must be accompanied by concrete reparation measures for the victims.
In his view, this approach will restore confidence to the traumatized populations and strengthen national cohesion. He emphasized that Congo’s future also depends on the international community’s ability to recognize the gravity of these crimes.
Finally, His Excellency Félix Tshisekedi reaffirmed his government’s determination to continue the fight for truth and justice, despite the obstacles.
