Burkina Faso advances toward food sovereignty with ambitious agricultural plan

Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso is making determined strides toward food sovereignty. The government has launched the Agropastoral and Fisheries Offensive (OAH), targeting a production of seven million tons of cereals for the 2025–2026 agricultural season.

To achieve this goal, concrete reforms are being implemented, including the restructuring of the National Society for Food Security (SONAGESS).

Now a central player in agricultural development, SONAGESS is tasked with managing crop distribution and regulating the agropastoral market.

Two field collection phases have already been piloted in regions like Bagré to prepare farmers for the upcoming harvest.

These efforts reflect a broader commitment to making agriculture a cornerstone of national food security.

Key initiatives include ensuring fertilizer availability, promoting agricultural mechanization, modernizing infrastructure, and implementing rigorous planning.

Through these measures, Burkina Faso is building a more self-reliant and resilient food system.
