Burkina Faso: The authorities put an end to the target Malaria Project

The Ministry of Research and Innovation announced today the definitive termination of all activities related to the Target Malaria Project across Burkina Faso. This decision marks a clear break from a scientific experiment that had raised significant concerns among the national public.

According to the official statement, all facilities containing genetically modified mosquitoes were placed under seal on August 18, 2025.

The ministry further specified that all samples will be destroyed in accordance with established protocols to ensure health and environmental safety.

This move follows growing concerns recently voiced by a national coalition monitoring biotechnological activities.

In a public declaration, the group had condemned the release of mosquitoes under the project, arguing that such actions posed unmanaged risks to both populations and the ecosystem.

The halt of the project aligns with a precautionary and scientifically sovereign approach.

The government reiterated its commitment to prioritizing local and sustainable solutions in the fight against malaria, while safeguarding public health and the integrity of the nation’s biological heritage.
