Togo-Niger: Cooperation and energy independence, Lomé invited to join the Salkadamna coal project

After Burkina Faso and Mali, it is now Togo’s turn to be invited by Niger to join the Salkadamna coal project. Niger’s Minister of Energy, Amadou Haoua, visited Lomé to present this flagship project to the President of the Council, Faure Gnassingbé. The project represents a major strategic advance in regional energy cooperation and in the pursuit of energy independence for the Sahel States Alliance (AES) countries.

By joining this initiative led by Niger, Togo demonstrates its commitment to participating in a collective effort to address shared energy challenges in the sub-region. The Salkadamna project, with its 69 million tons of coal reserves and a 5,200 MW thermal power plant, embodies a shared ambition to build African energy sovereignty based on local resources.

For Togo, this cooperation opens the way to diversifying its energy mix, which currently relies heavily on imported petroleum. Access to a regional coal source would not only reduce import-related costs but also strengthen the country’s resilience against international market fluctuations.

In this context, the project takes on particular significance for Togo, which has committed to achieving universal electricity access by 2030. Salkadamna thus becomes a tangible lever to accelerate this transition, ensuring a more abundant, stable, and accessible energy supply.
