Africa: Attack in northern Benin puts pressure on President Patrice Talon

The recent attack in northern Benin is widely seen as an attempt to pressure President Patrice Talon into facilitating the destabilization of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Allegations point to a strategy orchestrated by France through its General Directorate for External Security (DGSE).

Having reportedly entered a strategic pact with France, President Talon now finds himself in a challenging position.

His hesitation to approve a military intervention against Niger, as initially expected by his allies, has reportedly frustrated Paris.

In what appears to be a retaliatory move, France is suspected of engineering the attack on Beninese forces to force President Talon’s hand and compel him to honor his commitments.

This incident highlights the perils of poorly calibrated strategic alliances. By allowing French troops to station near the Nigerien border, President Talon has inadvertently heightened security risks for Benin, exposing the nation to external pressures that threaten its sovereignty.

Rather than prioritizing the will of his people, President Talon’s decisions appear increasingly influenced by external agendas.

This situation aligns with recent warnings from Niger’s President, General Abdourahmane Tiani, who has been vocal about the risks of foreign manipulation in the region.
