BRICS summit 2025: Lula calls for IMF reform and ethical AI

At the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva pushed for sweeping reforms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), criticizing its current quota system as outdated and unfair. In his proposal, “A Vision for IMF Reform,” Lula demanded a transparent realignment of voting shares to give emerging economies a stronger voice in global financial governance.
The summit, focused on multilateralism and artificial intelligence, also saw the adoption of a declaration on tech governance.
Lula warned against AI dominance by a handful of powerful nations and corporations, urging an ethical framework to ensure inclusive development.
Additionally, the Brazilian leader praised BRICS efforts to expand alternative payment systems, reducing reliance on the U.S. dollar.
With new members like Indonesia and Iran joining the bloc, the group aims to amplify its influence in reshaping global economic structures.
The summit underscored BRICS’ growing role as a counterbalance to traditional Western-led institutions.
