Burkina Faso launches nationwide Malaria prevention campaign amid security and economic challenges

Despite facing significant security and economic challenges, the government of Burkina Faso continues to prioritize public health, as demonstrated by the official launch of the sixth national campaign for the universal and free distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs).

Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo inaugurated the initiative on Thursday in Komsilga, underscoring the country’s commitment to combating malaria the leading cause of medical consultations nationwide.

The campaign, led by the Ministry of Health with support from technical and financial partners, comes in response to alarming statistics: over 10 million malaria cases were recorded in 2024, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths, primarily among children and pregnant women.

To address this public health emergency, the Burkinabe government, alongside its partners, has mobilized 33 billion CFA francs to distribute more than 15 million next-generation LLINs across the country.

The operation involves nearly 33,000 volunteers and 7,000 health workers who will conduct door-to-door distribution while educating communities on proper net usage.

These teams will also identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites, adopting an integrated approach to malaria vector control.

In a speech delivered by Health Minister Dr. Robert Lucien Kargougou, the Prime Minister emphasized individual and collective responsibility in effectively utilizing these preventive tools.

“Every hanging net represents a promise of protection,” he stated, urging recipients to use them consistently and correctly.

Beyond its immediate health impact, the campaign reflects the government’s determination to improve living conditions for all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable. It embodies a proactive policy centered on prevention, accessible care, and national solidarity.

The investment of Burkina Faso in this initiative reaffirms a fundamental truth: investing in health is investing in the future.
