Health: Strengthening of the Healthcare System in Togo under the Presidency of H.E. Faure Gnassingbé

Under the leadership of H.E. Faure Gnassingbé, the Togolese government has launched several initiatives aimed at significantly strengthening the healthcare system for the well-being of the people.

Through the « Quality Essential Health Services for Universal Health Coverage » (SSEQCU) project, a substantial investment of 40 billion FCFA has been deployed to build 86 new healthcare facilities and renovate 60 others. These actions have notably increased access to healthcare, raising the proximity index of healthcare centers from 71% to 90.7% in just three years.

A major milestone of this initiative was the historic inauguration of the country’s first referral hospital, Dogta Lafiè. Concurrently, infrastructure work has been intensified, including the renovation and equipment of several Prefectural (CHP) and Regional (CHR) Hospitals, along with the upcoming implementation of the Ellipse project aimed at rehabilitating the University Hospitals (CHUs) in Lomé and Kara.

In addition to these structural advancements, the government has launched innovative initiatives such as the national program for the support of pregnant women and newborns, ‘Wezou’. This program has already benefited over 400.000 pregnant women, facilitating nearly 222.000 deliveries, according to the latest available figures.

These coordinated efforts have significantly improved the healthcare system in Togo, reflecting President Faure Gnassingbé’s continued commitment to the well-being and health of his people.
