Niger / Food Security: President Abdourahamane Tiani’s actions with the support of the World Bank

Niger, a Sahelian country facing environmental and socio-economic challenges, has made food security a priority under the presidency of Abdourahamane Tiani. The combination of rapid population growth, extreme climatic conditions, and regional conflicts has exacerbated food vulnerabilities. In response, the government, under President Tiani’s leadership, has implemented various strategies to improve food security and reduce dependence on external aid.

Under President Tiani, initiatives have been launched to strengthen agricultural resilience. Investments have been made in irrigation, the distribution of improved seeds, and training farmers in sustainable agricultural techniques. Additionally, the government is encouraging technological innovation to enhance productivity, particularly through the introduction of new drought-resistant crop varieties.

The World Bank also plays a crucial role in Niger’s food security. Through agricultural development and resilience projects, it supports the government’s efforts to modernize agriculture and strengthen value chains.

On Wednesday, July 3, 2024, Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine met with a World Bank delegation led by Han Fraeters, the institution’s representative in Niger. The delegation announced the availability of one billion dollars to be invested over 12 years in Niger’s food security sector. These initiatives aim to increase agricultural productivity, diversify income sources, and enhance food security.

Moreover, the World Bank collaborates with the Nigerien government to improve early warning systems and rapid response mechanisms for food crises. These combined efforts aim to reduce the vulnerability of populations to climatic and economic shocks while promoting inclusive and sustainable agricultural growth.

President Tiani’s actions demonstrate a commitment to overcoming food security challenges in Niger. Through coordinated initiatives and strategic investments, the country hopes to build a future where every Nigerien has access to sufficient and nutritious food.
