Togo: International day against drug abuse, the country opts for prevention

Each June 26, the international community commemorates World Drug Day. This year, Togo once again observed the tradition by highlighting the dangers posed by drug use.

Centered around the theme « The evidence is clear, invest in prevention », the Minister of Security and Civil Protection, Calixte Batossie Madjoulba, emphasized the priority given to prevention, which has shown encouraging results, especially in schools.

In response to the worrying rise in drug use, the Togolese government has implemented a series of measures to effectively combat this scourge that threatens the youth and social stability of the country. These initiatives cover various aspects, ranging from prevention to repression, and include the rehabilitation of drug addicts.

The Togolese State first strengthened the capacities of institutions responsible for fighting drugs. The creation of specialized bodies, such as the National Anti-Drug Committee (CNA), has enabled the centralization and coordination of national efforts. Regular training sessions are provided to law enforcement agencies to enhance their effectiveness in detecting and repressing drug trafficking.

Awareness-raising plays a key role in Togo’s anti-drug strategy. Large-scale awareness campaigns are conducted in schools, universities, and communities. These campaigns aim to educate young people about the dangers of drugs and promote healthy lifestyles.

The involvement of local communities is also crucial in the fight against drugs. The government encourages the creation of local drug vigilance and prevention committees. These committees work closely with local authorities to report suspicious activities and raise awareness among residents about the dangers of drugs.

Through these varied and integrated measures, the Togolese government is addressing the drug problem comprehensively. By combining prevention, repression, rehabilitation, and international cooperation, Togo strives to reduce the impact of drugs on its population and build a healthier and safer society for its citizens.
