Burkina Faso: Amid internal crisis, Sweden closes its embassy in the land of upright people and in other countries

In the midst of an internal crisis, Sweden has decided to close several of its embassies around the world, including the one in Burkina Faso. The closure of the Swedish Embassy in Burkina Faso is part of a severe internal crisis that Sweden is currently facing.

The authorities of this country are dealing with major challenges, pushing them to reduce their diplomatic engagements abroad to reallocate their resources internally. This decision is not isolated, as several other Swedish embassies have also been closed in other countries, reflecting a strategic reorientation of its national priorities.

For Burkina Faso, this closure does not constitute a great loss. Historically, cooperation between Burkina Faso and Sweden has never been truly beneficial. According to analysts, in key areas such as economics, education, health, and others, bilateral projects were often marked by impacts that did not meet expectations. The expected investments did not have the anticipated impacts, and the technical and financial support was often insufficient and ill-suited to local needs.

The absence of this embassy could even offer an opportunity for Burkina Faso to redefine its international partnerships and turn towards countries and international organizations ready to engage in more promising collaborations.
