Mali: The European Union Training Mission (EUTM) draws to a close

After eleven years of presence in Mali, the European Union Training Mission (EUTM) in the fight against terrorism is coming to a definitive end. This decision marks the conclusion of an important step in international efforts to strengthen the country’s security capabilities, alongside operations such as Barkhane and Takuba, as well as the UN mission.

Scheduled for May 18, 2024, the farewell ceremony provided an opportunity for the EUTM Commander, Brigadier General Santiago J. Fdez. Ortiz-Repiso, and the Chief of the General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces, Major General Oumar Diarra, to pay tribute to the joint efforts deployed during these years of cooperation.

This EU training mission played a crucial role in strengthening Mali’s military and security capabilities, thus contributing to national and international efforts to combat terrorism and ensure stability in the region. Through training and advisory programs, it helped develop the skills of the Malian armed forces and prepare them to face the security challenges they encounter.

The end of the EUTM in Mali represents a turning point in security cooperation between the European Union and Mali, but also a moment of reflection on the next steps in the fight against terrorism and peace consolidation in the region. As this mission comes to an end, it is essential to continue supporting Mali in its efforts to ensure the security and well-being of its population.
