Niger: After Mali, the CNSP breaks all ties with Ukraine

In a bold move on Tuesday, August 6, the Nigerien government announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Ukraine. This decision marks a significant step in affirming the solidarity and cohesion among the members of the Sahel States Alliance (AES), with Niger playing a pivotal role.

The Nigerien government expressed shock and deep indignation over recent statements made by Ukrainian officials regarding incidents in Mali.

Andrew Yusov, spokesperson for Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, disclosed in an interview with a Ukrainian media outlet that Kiev had provided intelligence to the rebels of the Strategic Permanent Framework for the Defense of the Azawad People (CSP-DPA).

This intelligence was allegedly used in clashes with the Malian army and its Russian Wagner allies in Tinzaouatène from July 25 to 27.

These remarks were echoed by Yurii Pyvovarov, Ukraine’s ambassador to Senegal, on the embassy’s Facebook page.

Reacting to these revelations, Niger followed Mali’s lead in breaking off diplomatic relations with Ukraine.

This move underscores the mutual assistance and unity within the AES, which includes Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

The alliance aims to bolster regional cooperation and solidarity in addressing common challenges, particularly security and stability.

The unwavering support among AES countries showcases the strength and cohesion of this alliance. By acting in unison, AES members demonstrate their commitment to defending their shared interests and territorial integrity.

This solidarity is especially vital as Sahelian countries face persistent terrorist threats and external interferences.

Niger’s decision sends a clear message to the international community: AES countries will not tolerate any interference in their internal affairs and will steadfastly support their allies.

The diplomatic break with Ukraine is a testament to their resolve to protect their interests and uphold their sovereignty.

This diplomatic rift between Niger and Ukraine highlights the growing solidarity and affinity among AES nations.

By acting collectively, these countries are committed to building a secure and prosperous future for the Sahel region.

The international community must acknowledge this unity and respect the Sahelian peoples’ desire for self-governance.
