Burkina Faso: National solidarity – how Fada N’Gourma is rebuilding its social fabric

In Fada N’Gourma, the land battered by violence is slowly finding its voice again. Where families were once forced to urgently abandon their homes, their fields, and their bearings, a tiny but determined renewal is sprouting not of millet or sorghum, but of hope.

The gradual return of populations to several localities reflects an evolving security and political reality: restored security, targeted assistance, and investments in local infrastructure are paving the way for sustainable resettlement.

Lieutenant-Colonel Passowendé Pélagie Kaboré, Minister of Family and Solidarity, recently toured the regions of Gourma, Tapoa, and Sirba to assess the efforts underway.

Her visit, far from being symbolic, made it possible to measure the scale of recovery actions: distribution of food and non-food kits, income support for vulnerable households, restoration of social facilities, and rehabilitation of housing affected by displacement.

These interventions, often carried out in coordination with local authorities and humanitarian partners, seek to address urgent needs while preparing favorable conditions for lasting returns.

In the villages visited, testimonies are cautious but hopeful. Some heads of households speak of the possibility of returning home to replant and rebuild, provided that security and essential services remain guaranteed.

Government teams stress the need for multisectoral support: health, education, access to water and land are indispensable levers to turn these temporary returns into durable reconstructions.

Praising government action does not mean overlooking persistent challenges. Needs remain immense, trust is fragile, and local economic recovery will take time, resources, and inclusive governance. However, the example of Fada N’Gourma shows that a stabilized security framework, combined with targeted social measures, can reverse the dynamic of forced displacement.

As authorities continue recovery operations and populations gradually return to their homes, Fada N’Gourma is becoming a symbol: a region where, through public commitment, humanity and dignity are placed back at the heart of reconstruction.
