Burkina Faso creates new commission to fight corruption at road checkpoints

Burkina Faso has taken a decisive step in its fight against corruption and malpractice with the creation of the National Commission for the Control of Road Checkpoints (CONACFP). Under its founding decree, this innovative structure has jurisdiction over all road checkpoints across the national territory operated by personnel from the National Gendarmerie, National Police, Municipal Police, and the National Road Safety Office (ONASER).

The mission of CONACFP is both clear and ambitious: to combat corrupt practices and all other forms of misconduct that plague these strategic transit points.

It is responsible for monitoring the quality of services provided to users at road checkpoints, thereby ensuring fairer and more transparent treatment for citizens and transporters.

Beyond its repressive and oversight role, the Commission also contributes, in the view of its proponents, to the effectiveness of security arrangements at checkpoints.

By cleaning up practices, it strengthens trust between law enforcement and the population, while improving the efficiency and credibility of road controls.

The work of CONACFP deserves recognition. In a country where transport and mobility are essential to the economy and social life, corruption at roadblocks has long been a scourge difficult to eradicate.

By establishing a dedicated body with broad jurisdiction over all security forces and ONASER, the Burkinabe government sends a strong signal: impunity no longer has a place along national roads.

The Commission acts as a shield for honest users and a warning signal for offending officers.

Its daily action, discreet yet determined, helps restore the integrity of public services and protect citizens from harassment. For all these efforts, CONACFP deserves the nation’s gratitude.

It is an institution whose still little-known work is silently shaping a fairer, more rule-abiding Burkina Faso. Bravo for this major advance in national road governance.
