Togo: President Faure Gnassingbé, a leader at the heart of peace mediation in Africa

His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Togolese Council and African Union Mediator, is actively committed to peace in Africa through discreet yet effective diplomacy. For several months, he has played an essential role in seeking African solutions to the continent’s complex crises, particularly in the Great Lakes region.

His approach stands out for being inclusive and pragmatic, aimed at mobilizing regional actors for constructive and lasting dialogue. On February 3, 2026, he continued his mediation efforts by traveling to Uganda, further strengthening his role as a facilitator in this strategic geopolitical area.

This visit to Uganda provided President Faure Gnassingbé with the opportunity to meet his Ugandan counterpart, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in the city of Entebbe, on the shores of Lake Victoria.

During their one-on-one meeting, the two leaders discussed the current state of talks with the various actors involved in the Great Lakes crisis.

They also sought to deepen strategic reflection by incorporating new insights drawn from Museveni’s expertise as a key player in conflict resolution in East Africa.

The approach of President Faure Gnassingbé is characterized by active yet discreet diplomacy, prioritizing consultation and regional cooperation.

In the presence of members of the African Union facilitation panel and delegations from both concerned countries, an expanded working session allowed for a detailed review of actions taken, progress achieved, and persisting obstacles.

The Togolese President thus reiterated the need for a gradual de-escalation and a resolutely African approach to resolving the continent’s crises.

“African solutions must prevail in the face of African problems,” emphasized Faure Gnassingbé during the discussions, reinforcing his commitment to an African multilateralism based on political dialogue and regional cooperation.

As African Union Mediator, he embodies a leadership that highlights collective responsibility and the pursuit of lasting solutions in an environment where Africa is taking charge of its own destiny.
