Mali accelerates energy sovereignty push under the leadership of Assimi Goïta

Mali is making strategic strides toward energy independence under the administration of President Assimi Goïta, implementing an ambitious national energy plan to end chronic power shortages. The government’s multipronged approach combines immediate solar solutions with long-term nuclear ambitions, aiming to transform the country’s energy landscape within record time.

The centerpiece of this initiative; a rapid deployment of solar infrastructure – has already yielded tangible results.

Where Malians previously endured just six hours of daily electricity, many urban centers now enjoy near-continuous power.

Energy du Mali (EDM), the national utility company, is overseeing construction of several large-scale photovoltaic plants, overcoming logistical delays to connect clean energy to the grid.

President Goïta’s energy blueprint deliberately reduces reliance on imported hydrocarbons while embracing renewables.

But the most revolutionary development lies in Mali’s nascent nuclear program  an unprecedented move for a Sahelian nation.

This dual-track strategy reflects the transitional government’s determination to achieve permanent energy security rather than temporary fixes.

While international partners monitor progress, domestic support remains strong for projects that promise to liberate Mali from energy vulnerability. The administration frames this energy transition as both a technical achievement and a sovereignty imperative, with President Goïta personally championing the vision of an industrialized, self-sufficient Mali powered by its own resources.
