Burkina Faso/ALT: In Geneva, the country advocates for a fair fight against all global crises

The 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament is currently being held in Geneva, Switzerland, under the theme: “Parliamentary cooperation and multilateralism for peace, justice and prosperity for all in a world in turmoil.” On this occasion, the President of Burkina Faso’s Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT), His Excellency Dr. Ousmane Bougouma, delivered a speech on July 30, 2025, highlighting the security situation in Burkina Faso and across the Sahel region.
In his address, Dr. Bougouma reminded participants that terrorism has plagued Burkina Faso and its neighboring countries for over a decade—a war too often overlooked by the international media spotlight. He lamented that, despite its devastating impact, this crisis receives far less global attention and solidarity than other conflicts such as those in Ukraine, Sudan, or Gaza.
For the ALT President, terrorism is a borderless threat. No nation, regardless of its power, is immune. He emphasized that security is a collective and indivisible good, and that the fight against terrorism in the Sahel must be treated as a global emergency. In his view, global peace also depends on the stability of this long-neglected region.
Dr. Bougouma also highlighted the crucial role that parliaments can play in preventing conflicts and building peace. Through dialogue, advocacy, the passage of fair laws, and public awareness, parliaments have the ability to ease tensions, uphold human dignity, and strengthen the values of ethics and justice.
He concluded by calling on his fellow speakers to reject indifference and the normalization of violence. He urged them to prioritize diplomacy and dialogue in the resolution of all conflicts, guided by mutual respect and shared humanity.
