Diplomacy: US expels South African ambassador in diplomatic spat

The US has declared South Africa’s ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, persona non grata, expelling him from Washington. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Rasool of « hating America » and being a « divisive politician, » citing remarks the ambassador made criticizing former President Trump and the Maga movement.
He also highlighted demographic shifts in the US, suggesting the Maga movement emerged in response to a declining white majority.
South Africa’s presidency called the expulsion « regrettable, » reaffirming its commitment to strengthening ties with the US. The move marks a new low in relations, which have deteriorated since Trump took office.
Last month, Trump froze aid to South Africa, accusing its government of « unjust racial discrimination » against white Afrikaners and criticizing its land reform policies. South Africa denies these claims, stating its laws aim to address historical inequalities.
The White House warned that aid would remain suspended until South Africa stops « supporting bad actors » and addresses violence against minority farmers.
This diplomatic clash highlights growing tensions between the two nations, with the expulsion of Rasool signaling a further breakdown in relations. Both countries now face the challenge of navigating an increasingly contentious partnership.
