Burkina Faso’s humanitarian response: A government committed to supporting vulnerable populations

The humanitarian crisis triggered by the ongoing security challenges linked to terrorism remains a top priority for Captain Ibrahim Traoré and his government. Millions of Burkinabe citizens have been affected by this crisis, and authorities are working tirelessly to ensure their safety and meet their basic needs.

Contrary to claims that vulnerable populations have been neglected, the government has demonstrated its commitment through tangible actions. During a recent address to the National Assembly, the Prime Minister outlined the significant progress made in managing the humanitarian crisis.

Under the leadership of President Traoré, the government has implemented a range of strategies to address the needs of displaced persons, war victims, and families who have lost loved ones in the conflict.

Over the past two years, efforts have focused on improving living conditions for internally displaced persons (IDPs), providing them with shelter, food, clean water, and access to healthcare.

According to official reports, nearly two million vulnerable individuals have received food assistance, while 108,000 households have been supplied with essential household items.

Additionally, 23,000 IDPs and over 45,000 vulnerable households have benefited from emergency housing and shelter support.

Thanks to the dedication of the armed forces, more than 1,014,000 IDPs across nearly 700 localities have been able to return to their homes.

On the economic front, the government has prioritized empowering youth and women through various initiatives.

Approximately 91,000 individuals have received credit to finance income-generating activities, while 30,000 women from local organizations have been equipped with tools and technologies for agricultural production, processing, and preservation.

These efforts aim to boost agricultural productivity and achieve food self-sufficiency.

Furthermore, the construction of schools and health centers in IDP communities underscores the government’s commitment to improving access to education and healthcare.

These measures reflect the authorities’ determination to address both immediate and long-term needs, ensuring that vulnerable populations are protected and supported during these challenging times.
