Burkina Faso: Significant progress in security

On October 2, 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed the presidency following a coup d’état that ousted President Paul-Henri Damiba on September 30. Coming to power with clear visions and precise objectives, the new Burkinabe leader embarked on a comprehensive reform agenda, particularly in the realm of security.

Over the past two years, significant progress has been made within the military and the defense and security forces. Today, Burkina Faso boasts nearly 28 Rapid Intervention Battalions (BIR) and 13 Mobile Intervention Unit Groups (GUMI).

To bolster the ranks of the combat forces, 14,000 military personnel of various profiles and thousands of Volunteers for Defense (VDP) have been recruited.

These initiatives have enabled the reconquest of over 71% of Burkinabe territory, accompanied by the reinstatement of numerous public services, the reopening of 15 administrative district headquarters, and the resettlement of 212 villages.

Today, the Burkinabe army has demonstrated expertise in the maintenance, renovation, and manufacturing of military equipment, thanks to cooperation with Russia.

In terms of humanitarian management, government actions have provided food assistance to nearly 2,000,000 vulnerable individuals and supported 108,000 households.

Additionally, emergency housing and shelters have been provided to 23,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and over 45,000 vulnerable households in 2024.

91,000 people have received credits to finance their activities; 30,000 women affiliated with women’s organizations have received production equipment for the processing and preservation of agro-sylvo-pastoral products, facilitating the economic empowerment of young girls and women.

These reforms are widely applauded by the population, who have rallied behind their president in the fight against terrorism and the restoration of peace in Burkina Faso.

A renewed sense of hope is emerging in the hearts of the Burkinabè, who aspire to reclaim the Burkina Faso envisioned by Thomas Sankara many years ago.
