Burkina Faso’s Women: Pillars of resilience in the fight for peace and stability

In Burkina Faso, women are standing shoulder to shoulder with men in the relentless battle to restore peace and stability across the nation. Their unwavering determination and deep sense of patriotism have made them indispensable in the mission to protect lives, secure property, and safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.
A Salute to Women’s courage and commitment
During the commemoration of the 2025 International Women’s Day, Mahamadou Sana, the Minister of Security and a Division Commissioner of Police, paid tribute to the extraordinary contributions of Burkinabe women.
He highlighted their vital role in the ongoing struggle against terrorism and their active participation in building a stronger, more resilient nation.
“Just like their male counterparts, women in Burkina Faso have shown remarkable courage and dedication in the face of adversity,” Sana stated. “Their involvement is not just symbolic—it is transformative, and it is essential to our collective success.”
Women at the Forefront of National Security
In a country grappling with persistent security challenges, Burkinabè women, particularly those in the national army and security forces, have refused to remain on the sidelines.
They are actively contributing to the fight against terrorism, demonstrating that the path to peace requires the efforts of every citizen.
From intelligence gathering to community engagement, women are playing diverse and critical roles in the security sector. Their unique perspectives and skills are helping to shape more effective strategies for countering extremism and fostering social cohesion.
A Vision for equality and empowerment
Minister Sana emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality and creating opportunities for women in the security sector.
Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, efforts are being made to ensure that women can fully participate in the nation’s development and security initiatives.
“Women are not just beneficiaries of change—they are its architects,” Sana declared. “Their role is indispensable in building a Burkina Faso that is stronger, more resilient, and more just. We will continue to work tirelessly to empower them and ensure their voices are heard.”
