Togo extends state of emergency in Savanes Region to combat rising insecurity

On March 6, Togo’s National Assembly approved a 12-month extension of the state of emergency in the Savanes region during a plenary session. The decision, proposed by Security and Civil Protection Minister Calixte Madjoulba, Territorial Administration Minister Hodabalo Awaté, and Relations with Republic Institutions Minister Pacôme Adjourouvi, aims to address the escalating threat of terrorism and insecurity in the area.

Since its initial implementation, the state of emergency has enabled stricter measures to weaken terrorist groups operating in the region, enhance the protection of civilians and their property, and facilitate targeted security operations.

The extension underscores the Togolese government’s and President’s commitment to safeguarding citizens and their assets.

This prolonged state of emergency will also allow the executive branch to develop and implement more robust strategies to counter the growing terrorist threat in Togo.

The move highlights the government’s determination to stabilize the region and ensure long-term security for its population
