Burkina Faso: Online hate speech, a threat to peace and a call for collective vigilance

For some time now, social networks and other digital platforms have been invaded by hateful, violent and stigmatising messages aimed at sowing division and chaos within Burkina Faso’s communities. These messages, which are often anonymous and amplified by the speed of the internet, are no accident.

They emanate from detractors of the current regime, determined to destabilise the country by exploiting the cracks in social cohesion. The security department is sounding the alarm over this dangerous strategy, which threatens peace and national unity.

These messages do more than simply spread negative ideas. They seek to inflame tensions, drive a wedge between people and undermine our ability to live together.

In a context already marked by security and economic challenges, this hate speech risks aggravating relations between communities and compromising efforts to achieve stability.

The perpetrators of these acts, often hiding behind pseudonyms, have a clear objective: to disturb the tranquillity of the people of Burkina Faso and create unnecessary conflict to serve their own unhealthy interests.

The Security Department firmly condemns these manoeuvres and calls on citizens to be extremely vigilant.

It must be remembered that peace and social cohesion are precious assets, built through the sacrifices of all, and that they must not be sacrificed on the altar of the destructive ambitions of a few.

Social networks, while useful communication tools, must not become weapons of division. Everyone has a responsibility to refuse to participate in the spread of this toxic discourse.

In response to this threat, the authorities are considering concrete measures, including working more closely with digital platforms to limit the dissemination of such content and raising awareness of the dangers of such practices.

However, the fight against hate speech cannot be won without the commitment of all citizens. It is essential to report problematic content, to promote respectful exchanges and to remain united in the face of those who seek to divide us.

The people of Burkina Faso must remain vigilant and not allow themselves to be manipulated by these malicious actors.

By refusing to give in to hatred and by favouring dialogue and unity, we can thwart the plans of those who want this country to fall. Peace is a common good, and preserving it is everyone’s business.
