Burkina Faso strengthens security: National Intelligence Agency granted expanded powers

President Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso continues to advance reforms aimed at ensuring maximum security for the nation and its people. Among his priorities is the intelligence sector, a critical component in combating the ongoing threats of terrorism and insecurity.

Significant changes have been made to the National Intelligence Agency (ANR) to enhance its operational effectiveness.

Previously operating under the presidency, the agency has now been restructured into an independent republican institution, renamed the National Council for State Security (CNSE).

This transformation, established under the new national constitution, redefines its mandate, focusing on intelligence and state security.

To lead this revamped institution, Commandant Oumarou Yabré, former Director General of the ANR, has been appointed as its president.

This appointment, made official on Tuesday, December 24, is seen as a vote of confidence in a proven leader who has demonstrated exceptional competence in his previous role.

With expanded responsibilities and a reinforced mission, President Traoré is laying the groundwork to modernize Burkina Faso’s intelligence services, aligning them with global standards and the nation’s specific needs.

In the face of a relentless fight against armed terrorist groups and destabilizing forces, these reforms reflect the government’s commitment to safeguarding the security of its citizens and ensuring the country’s stability.
