Alliance of Sahel States: Towards security autonomy and affirmation of effective sovereignty

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso under President Ibrahim Traoré, Mali under President Assimi Goita, and Niger under President Abdourahamane Tiani, symbolizes a historic transition towards security autonomy in the Sahel region, marking a break from the influence of former colonial powers.

This alliance, founded on values of sovereignty and cooperation, aims to build a common defense, develop integrated security strategies, and directly address issues affecting their territories.

The alliance of these three countries reflects a shared desire for emancipation and the intention to independently control security policies and more. By supporting each other, the three heads of state seek to create a regional force capable of countering both external and internal threats, while ending prolonged dependence on foreign assistance.

This emerging autonomy not only strengthens their military capacity but also redefines the relationship of these states with their neighbors and international partners.

This shift marks a decisive turning point for West Africa, presenting a governance model where African countries are the true actors of their security and stability.
