Brazil: Lula proposes exclusion of international stars following Seleção’s disappointing results

Brazil is going through a challenging period on the football stage. In response to this situation, the country’s president, Lula, recently proposed a radical measure targeting several Brazilian stars playing abroad. This Friday, the Seleção secured a 2-1 victory over Chile, despite the Chilean team being last in the South American World Cup qualifiers.

Despite the win, Marquinhos and Vinicius Jr.’s team is in 4th place in the standings, with a mixed record of 4 wins, 1 draw, and 4 losses. On Wednesday, Brazil will face Peru, who are also near the bottom, ranked 9th out of 10.

 Lula’s Frustration with International Stars

The victory hasn’t eased tensions within the country, especially for President Lula. In an interview aired by Cope radio, Lula expressed his frustration with Brazilian players playing abroad. He remarked that these international stars « are not better than those playing in Brazil » and lamented the lack of talents comparable to legends like Garrincha or Romario.

Exclusion of Expatriate Brazilian Players ?

As a passionate Corinthians fan, Lula also praised the performance of two local players, Igor Jesus and Luiz Henrique from Botafogo, who scored the goals in the win against Chile. He argued that « there are equally skilled players in Brazil » and urged for more opportunities for local talents. The Brazilian president went as far as suggesting that the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) should stop calling up international stars such as Vinicius Jr., Marquinhos, or Gabriel.

Although Brazil boasts a wealth of talented players in top European clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Barça, Arsenal, and PSG, the team is still struggling in the World Cup qualifiers. However, the idea of excluding these international stars raises concerns, as the local players may not be able to fill their absence and help the Seleção return to its best form.
