Togo: President Faure Gnassingbé advocates for a new model of international cooperation at the UN general assembly

On September 23, during the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Faure Gnassingbé participated in a high-level summit focused on the future of global governance. This event brought together world leaders, experts, and civil society representatives to address major challenges facing the planet. In his speech, the Togolese President highlighted the multiple crises shaking the world and the need to reinvent international cooperation for a more sustainable future.

President Gnassingbé stressed the importance of a global response to the systemic crises that are significantly impacting regions often distant from the original causes. He also called for a « reimagined multilateralism, » arguing that current international institutions are outdated and no longer equipped to address today’s challenges. He advocated for a new model of international cooperation capable of providing sustainable solutions.

The Togolese leader also drew attention to Africa, a continent central to future development, particularly due to its youth and opportunities linked to the green and blue economy. He emphasized the need to experiment with new partnerships, particularly with the private sector, to support this growth potential.

Lastly, President Faure Gnassingbé highlighted the central role of the state in Togo’s development. He stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between African states and the international community to provide aid better suited to local realities. At the end of the summit, a « Pact for the Future » and a « Declaration on Future Generations » were unanimously adopted.
