Mali : A New momentum for peace, resignation of traditional leaders from Kidal and support for the transitional president

In the efforts to establish peace and national reconciliation in Mali, over 160 traditional leaders from the Kidal region have made a significant decision. They responded positively to the call of the Transitional President, Colonel Assimi Goïta, by immediately resigning from the Adrar des Ifoghas Council, the High Council for the Unity of Azawad (HCIA), and the Permanent Strategic Framework (CSP-PPC).

During a meeting chaired by the region’s governor, General El Hadji Gamou, these community leaders, all affiliated with the Superior Council of Imghads and Allies (CSIA), expressed their commitment to the authority of the state and their willingness to actively contribute to peace, national reconciliation, and social cohesion.

Agaly Ag Biga, spokesperson for the traditional leaders of Aguelhok, stated : « We, chiefs and fraction advisors of the Aguelhok Circle, declare our immediate resignation from the Adrar Council and the Permanent Strategic Framework (CSP-PPC). We also declare our total support for the ideals of His Excellency, Colonel Assimi Goïta, President of the Transition ».

Zeid Ag Noh, a traditional leader of Imididagane Iminass, also encouraged his community to support the Transitional President in the context of the « Direct Dialogue among Malians ».

However, the crucial question remains: is it possible to achieve lasting peace without the participation of leaders from the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), most of whom are subject to international arrest warrants for serious charges such as terrorism, crimes against humanity, and terrorism financing?

In the pursuit of peace, it may be essential to reconsider the possibility of reintegrating the former rebels of the CMA before launching the « Direct Dialogue among Malians ».
