ECOWAS-AES Crisis : President Faure Gnassingbe’s wisdom and fair play applauded continentally and globally

The Togolese President, Faure Gnassingbe, has been of great assistance in managing the conflict between ECOWAS and the countries of the AES. As always, he has employed his wisdom and spirit of unity, African solidarity, to address the various crises that arise within the community.

Since the beginning of the crisis, praises for the Togolese president have not been lacking, due to the stance he has taken and his demonstrated support for the AES countries. While he was initially criticized by others and labeled as a friend of the coup plotters, time eventually proved him right, and his approach was widely applauded.

For many, he is the only enlightened and visionary among the leaders of ECOWAS, and he is credited with the lifting of sanctions imposed on the three Sahel states grouped in the AES. As a reminder, after seven (07) months, the heavy economic and financial sanctions against Niger were finally lifted on February 24th, during an extraordinary summit held at the organization’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.

This includes those retained against the other three countries that underwent regime changes. Chosen as a facilitator for negotiations between the two parties, several actions were taken and initiatives were undertaken to resolve the ECOWAS-Niger-AES crisis.

Today, the successful and exemplary mediation, marked by solidarity and fraternity, of President Faure Gnassingbe has once again been highlighted. Through this act, H.E. Faure Gnassingbe has propelled Togolese diplomacy onto the continental and international stage.
