France : Gabriel Attal, Appointed Prime Minister
France has a new Prime Minister named Gabriel Attal.
Formerly the Minister of National Education and Youth, Gabriel Attal was appointed on Tuesday by Emmanuel Macron to lead his government.
Since the departure of Elisabeth Borne, officially announced on Monday in the middle of the day after nearly a year and a half as Prime Minister, several names were circulating to take her place at Matignon.
Emmanuel Macron ultimately chose the young minister. Gabriel Attal becomes the youngest Prime Minister of the French Fifth Republic at 34 years old and the first openly homosexual.
« I know I can count on your energy and commitment to implement the rearmament and regeneration project that I announced », declared Macron.
The leader of the Republicans, Éric Ciotti, promised the new Prime Minister Gabriel Attal a « responsible and rigorous » opposition.
« France urgently needs action, a different method of government », reacted the deputy from Alpes-Maritimes in a statement, advocating for « permanent communication » to make way for « a policy of clarity and firmness. »
According to Marine Le Pen, « the French can expect nothing » from Gabriel Attal.
« Attal returns to his position as spokesperson. The function of prime minister disappears. The presidential monarch governs alone with his court. Woe to the peoples whose princes are children, » reads Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s X profile.
