Togo: Positive assessment of Togo’s participation in COP 28
Togo’s participation in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) was deemed a success, according to the assessment released by the Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources in Lomé. One of the highlights of Togo’s participation in COP 28 was the signing of several conventions by President Faure Gnassingbé.
The Minister of Environment and Forest Resources highlighted that Togo consistently achieves positive results whenever Faure Gnassingbé leads a delegation.
He emphasized that the efforts made by each stakeholder in environmental protection and climate change mitigation should not be in vain.
Through Togo’s participation in COP 28, President Faure Gnassingbé showcased to the world that the issue of energy transition is not mere rhetoric but a reality. Two conventions were signed during the conference: one related to the expansion of the Blitta photovoltaic power plant, and the other related to the construction of a similar plant in Sokodé.
As a member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Togo aims to provide 100% electricity coverage to its population by 2030 and reserve 50% of its energy mix for renewables. The country also aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8% by 2025.
To achieve these goals, Togo is implementing climate action plans covering priority sectors such as agriculture, water, industry, forest resources, energy, and mechanisms for financial inclusion and climate risk coverage.
These significant achievements were showcased at the dedicated Togo Pavilion during the 28th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).
COP28 operationalized the Loss and Damage Fund related to climate change, an initiative relevant to many African countries.
